ABOUT SCC CARES
Rooted In History. Driven By Community In the Bay.
Our Story
The Sausalito Cruising Club was born in 1948 from the bonds forged by World War II veterans returning home and seeking fellowship, purpose, and the open water of San Francisco Bay. They found their home on a decommissioned WWII ammunition barge — a vessel they transformed into one of the most unique and storied clubhouses on the Bay. That barge has been moored at Dunphy Park since 1960, and for more than half a century it has been the heart of the Club's community life.
SCC CARES, the Sausalito Cruising Club Foundation, was established in early 2026 by a group of committed Club members who recognized both the profound opportunity and the urgent responsibility before them: to ensure the long-term preservation of this irreplaceable landmark, to honor the legacy of the veterans and mariners who built the Club, and to channel the goodwill of the broader Sausalito community into lasting charitable impact.
On March 4, 2026, the Sausalito Cruising Club Board of Directors voted unanimously to formally recognize and support the Foundation. That vote of confidence marked the beginning of SCC CARES as the official, independent 501(c)(3) charitable arm of the SCC community.
Our Mission
SCC CARES preserves our historic maritime heritage, supports member enrichment, fosters environmental stewardship, and provides charitable service to the Sausalito community — ensuring our Club’s proud legacy will endure for generations to come.
Our Vision
To be a vital bridge connecting Sausalito’s maritime past with its future — preserving our historic barge, enriching our community through education and service, and ensuring that all who share our values of fellowship, stewardship, and civic pride can experience the unique camaraderie that defines the Sausalito Cruising Club.
Our Values
The CARES name is both our promise and our framework. Each letter stands for a core value that guides everything we do:
C - Community
Preserving our historic maritime heritage and the Club that connects us — honoring the legacy of those who built in 1948 what we continue to enjoy today.
A - Alliance
Partnering with civic organizations, schools, conservation groups, and maritime institutions to multiply our impact and extend our reach across the Bay and beyond.
R - Responsibility
Stewarding Richardson Bay, its shoreline and habitats, while preserving our historic barge — and honoring the legacy of those who came before us.
E - Enrichment
Supporting maritime education, youth seamanship, and opportunities for members and community alike to learn, grow, and deepen their connection to the sea.
S - Spirit
Embodying the generous, welcoming Spirit of Sausalito — giving back to the community that has given us so much, in the tradition of the veterans who founded this Club.
Our Board of Trustees
SCC CARES is governed by an independent Board of Trustees drawn from the Club and the broader Sausalito community. Our founding trustees bring a shared commitment to the Club’s mission and the vision to grow it into something lasting. Additional trustees will be added as the Foundation builds out its full board in 2026.
